Traditional Crafts for the Oto Fire Festival
Learn traditional crafts and support a 1400-year-old cultural event
The Oto Fire Festival is a famous traditional spectacle held annually on February 6 at Kamikura Shrine in Shingu, Wakayama.
Meet and learn from a master artisan who crafts waraji (straw sandals) and aranawa (coarse rope) used in this festival.
For over a thousand years, waraji have been the traditional footwear of commoners and long-distance travelers. They are known for their excellent grip, even on wet, rocky terrain.
Recently, they have also gained attention for offering similar health benefits to walking barefoot.
However, the number of craftsmen making waraji in Japan has been declining each year.
Visit a waraji workshop near Kamikura Shrine to learn about the current state of waraji and aranawa craftsmanship.
Then, under the guidance of skilled artisans, experience part of the waraji-making process yourself.
