The Shimada Museum of Art features many items related to Miyamoto Musashi, including his swords and portraits—such as his famous duel with Sasaki Kojiro at Ganryujima. Enjoy a guided tour with the museum director and a licensed English guide.

15:10-15:30 Nishi-no-Musashizuka
At Nishi-no-Musashizuka, visit the Terao family grave, where a stone inscribed with Musashi’s real name, Harunobu Koji, stands. This site is believed to be one of Musashi’s possible burial places, as his student Terao Magonojo—who received The Book of Five Rings manuscript—was closely connected to him.

16:00-17:00 Reigando Cave (in Unganzen-ji Temple) Meditation Experience
Miyamoto Musashi spent his final years in Kumamoto, retreating to Reigando Cave to write The Book of Five Rings, a classic on swordsmanship and strategy. Reflect and meditate in the cave where he once trained his mind. At nearby Unganzen-ji Temple, see a swordsmanship display by his disciples and the Gohyaku Rakan—500 unique stone statues of Buddha’s disciples lining the path to the cave.
*In bad weather, meditation will take place in a hall at Unganzen-ji Temple.
