Opened in 1983, the Abashiri Prison Museum is an open-air museum showcasing 25 historic prison buildings from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Several structures are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

16:00-17:10 Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum

This facility features drift ice and Sea of Okhotsk nature. Experience -15°C drift ice, see “drift ice angels” (clione), enjoy scenic views, and try drift ice soft-serve ice cream (fee required).

18:40 Arrive at Kitakobushi Shiretoko Hotel & Resort

After checking in, have dinner at "the LIFE TABLE."

8:30-10:00 Board the Shiretoko Sightseeing Ship Aurora

Kamuiwakka Falls Course (90 min) departs from Utoro Port and cruises Shiretoko’s scenic spots, including views of Kamuiwakka Falls (“water of the gods”).

10:30-11:30 Shiretoko Goko Lakes

Elevated Wooden Path Walk (1.6 km / 40 min): Stroll an elevated boardwalk to Lake Ichiko and enjoy views of the Shiretoko Goko Lakes, Shiretoko Mountains, and the Sea of Okhotsk. Subject to weather conditions.

11:50-12:50 Utoro Shirietoku Roadside Station

14:35-15:15 Mt. Io MOKMOK Base

Mt. Io (Atosa-nupuri) is an active volcano with fumaroles, sulfur vents, and steam. Visitors can walk close to the crater area and enjoy the dramatic volcanic landscape. Hot spring eggs are available (fee required).

15:45-16:10 Lake Mashu Kamuy Terrace

Lake Mashu (“Lake of the Gods”) is a protected volcanic lake known for its deep blue color and mystical, often mist-covered scenery. Visibility may vary depending on weather.

Daytime canoeing (11:00, approx. 80 min) from Hosooka Canoe Port to Iwahogi Floodgate, offering a close-up experience of Kushiro Marsh. Subject to weather and conditions.

15:00-16:00 Kushiro Marsh Observatory

This facility lets visitors explore and learn about Kushiro Marsh via walking trails and viewpoints. The Satellite Viewpoint offers a wide panorama of the marsh landscape. Visibility may be affected by weather.

16:20-17:00 Kushiro City Japanese Crane Reserve

Established in 1958, this facility protects and breeds endangered red-crowned cranes and achieved the world’s first successful artificial hatching in 1970. Visitors can observe cranes up close year-round in a natural setting.

  • Operation Conditions/Tour Conditions

    - The last reception day (reservation deadline) is 30 days prior to the tour.

    - Requests are accepted for this tour. After a request has been made, customers will be contacted within 5 business days regarding availability.

    - Each tour can accommodate 1 to 6 participants.

    - Children younger than 6 years old may not join this tour.

    - If the tour is canceled, customers will be notified by the conducting company or their travel agent.

    - The itinerary displayed on the booking screen is the final itinerary. A separate copy of the final itinerary will not be sent to participants.

    - Customers with tattoos are not permitted to use hot springs at accommodations or alternative locations.

  • Exemptions/Itinerary Guarantee

    • The times listed in the itinerary are approximate and may change depending on conditions.
    • If you have plans before or after the tour on the same day, or if you are traveling from outside Hokkaido, please allow plenty of extra time in your schedule.
    • At Lake Mashu Kamuy Terrace and Kushiro Marsh Observatory, visibility may be poor due to fog or bad weather; however, no refunds will be provided in such cases.
    • Performances at Lake Akan Ainu Theater Ikor may be changed or canceled due to facility conditions or other circumstances.
    • If the Shiretoko Sightseeing Ship Aurora cruise or the walk on the elevated wooden path at Shiretoko Goko Lakes cannot take place due to bad weather or other conditions, the tour will visit an alternative location: the Shiretoko Nature Center.
    • If the Aurora cruise is canceled, a partial refund will be provided. However, no refunds will be given if guests are unable to walk on the elevated wooden path.
    • The elevated wooden path is safe from brown bears, as it is protected by a 7,000-volt electric fence.
    • The walking route is fixed: visitors turn back at the final observation deck and return along the same path. The path does not connect to ground-level trails, as this is designed for safety in case of brown bear sightings.
  • Canoe Experience

    Kushiro Marsh & River Canoe Experience Requirements:

    • Participants must be healthy, at least 6 years old, no taller than 190 cm, and weigh no more than 95 kg.
    • Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who is responsible for supervising them and ensuring they follow all rules.

    Clothing & Preparation:

    • From June to October, insects such as mosquitoes and horseflies are common. Please wear long sleeves and long pants.
    • It may be cold on the water, so bring warm clothing and rain gear.

    Health & Safety:

    • Please inform us in advance if you are pregnant or have epilepsy, heart conditions, or respiratory illnesses.
    • Those who have previously been stung by bees should get tested for allergies in advance. If you have an allergy, please bring your prescribed EpiPen and inform the guide on the day.

    Insurance:

    • Injuries caused by customer negligence are not covered by insurance. We recommend purchasing personal accident insurance in advance.

    Weather & Cancellations:

    • The experience operates in light rain but will be canceled if weather warnings are issued or if the guide determines conditions are unsafe.
    • Even after the tour starts, plans may change or be canceled due to sudden weather changes or field conditions.

    Alternative Plan & Refunds:

    • If the canoe experience is canceled, an alternative activity will be provided (Yamahana Onsen Refre).
    • A partial refund will be issued if the canoe experience is canceled.
    • No refunds will be given if the experience is shortened or the route is changed.

    Brown Bear Safety Guidelines (Shiretoko):

    To help avoid encounters with brown bears:

    • Make noise (talk or clap) while walking
    • Stay alert and look around carefully
    • Listen for sounds in your surroundings
    • Keep all food properly sealed

    If you encounter a brown bear:

    • Do not panic
    • Do not run
    • Stay calm
    • Slowly back away

    Rules & Etiquette for Visiting Shiretoko National Park:

    • Do not approach or disturb wild animals
    • Do not feed wildlife
    • If you see a brown bear, remain inside your vehicle
    • Stay on designated trails
    • Take all trash with you
    • Do not remove plants or animals from the park
    • Do not cook or eat in restricted areas
    • No smoking
    • Drones are not allowed

  • What to Wear/Bring

    - Please wear shoes and clothing which are easy to walk in.

    - This tour involves walking outdoors. Please take measures against heat depending on the season. Summer: Temperatures can reach up to 35°C. Please bring items that protect from the heat such as sunglasses, hat, parasol, neck cooler, etc.

    - As there may be a lot of mosquitoes in June to August, please bring insect repellent.

    - In rainy weather, using a raincoat is recommended as it offers better visibility than an umbrella, won't break in strong winds, and keeps the hands free.

  • Regarding Children/Infants

    As the itinerary includes a canoe experience, children younger than 6 years old may not join this tour.
