Tour Highlights

Join a small-group walking tour of Yoichi and Otaru with an English-speaking guide, traveling by local trains and buses for an authentic look at local life. Visit the Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery to explore its exhibits and enjoy whisky tastings, then stop at the historic Tanaka Sake Brewery for a tour and free sampling of various sakes, including freshly made unpasteurized sake. Stroll through the nostalgic stone-built streets of Otaru Sakaimachi, and finish the day with a romantic 40-minute evening canal cruise, where the sunset-lit historic buildings offer a beautiful view only seen from the water.

 

Schedule

8:00am Meet in front of Hokkaido-Sapporo Tourist Information Center, JR Sapporo Station West Concourse North Exit

Transfer to Yoichi Distillery by train + walk.

10:10am-11:00am Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery

The Yoichi Distillery, Nikka’s first distillery founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934, was built in Yoichi, Hokkaido to recreate a Scottish-style environment. It features four exhibits on whisky making and Taketsuru’s life, a paid tasting bar, and distillery-exclusive products for sale.

Transfer to Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkogura by local bus + walk.

12:15pm-12:50pm Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkogura

Tanaka Shuzo, a sake brewery in Otaru founded in 1899, features the historic Kikkogura stone warehouse (c.1905). Thanks to Hokkaido’s cool climate, sake is brewed year-round. Visitors can tour the brewery and enjoy free tastings of about 10 kinds of sake and liqueur, including freshly made unpasteurized sake.

Transfer to Otaru Sakaimachi Street by private car

1:00pm-2:40pm Stroll around Sakaimachi Street in Otaru

Enjoy free time for lunch along Otaru’s historic Sakaimachi Street, savoring fresh Hokkaido seafood and local specialties while soaking up the nostalgic atmosphere.

3:00pm-3:40pm Otaru Canal Cruise

Enjoy a 40-minute Otaru Canal cruise.

  • Operation Conditions/Tour Conditions

    - If the minimum number of participants (2) is not met by 30 days before the scheduled date, the tour on that date may be canceled.

    - 2 to 8 participants can be accommodated in 1 tour.

    - The last reception day (reservation deadline) is 30 days prior to the tour.

    - If the tour is canceled, customers will be notified by the conducting company or their travel agent.

    - This is a special tour for international visitors. Please understand that residents of Japan cannot make bookings for this tour.

    - The tour may be canceled or the course altered in case operation is suspended or inclement weather (poor visibility due to strong winds, snowstorms, etc.) is in the forecast.

    - Cancellation may occur due to traffic obstruction caused by heavy snowfall in Sapporo City, Otaru City and,Yoichi District.

    - Try tasting some whisky at Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery for a fee, and about 10 kinds of Japanese sake and liqueur at Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkogura for free.

    - Customers under 20 years of age are not allowed to drink alcohol, but may participate in the tour.

    - Public transportation will be used to move around on this tour. Please note that seating is not guaranteed. In addition, please note that a taxi may be used for transfer due to timetable revision and operation circumstances. cannot proceed (due to inclement weather, traffic congestion, or other circumstances), the tour will be guided to an experience at an alternative location below.

  • Regarding Children/Infants

    Infants 0-5 years old are free of charge.

  • What to Wear/Bring

    - Please wear shoes and clothing which are easy to walk in.(A distance of about 4 km will be covered on this tour.)

    - This tour involves walking outdoors. Please take measures against heat or cold depending on the season.

    Summer: Temperatures can reach up to 35°C. Please bring items that protect from the heat such as sunglasses, hat, parasol, neck cooler, etc.

    Winter: The tour may proceed in snowy conditions. Please be sure to dress warmly and wear non-slip footwear such as shoes with slip-resistant soles or rubber boots.

    - Large luggage such as suitcases cannot be brought during the tour. Please have them delivered in advance, or leave them in a locker or at your hotel before participating.
